Kid’s Activity Calendar- August 17th – August 23rd

It’s about that time…

Getting ready for back to school!

This week is all about thinking about preparing to go back to school. For most, this is a confusing time with a lot of uncertainty about the upcoming school year. For this week, we will start integrating school-related activities that start to transition the mindset from summer break to return-to-learning!

Monday August 17th: First day of school interview!

On the first day of school, you might be asked to interview a classmate and introduce them to your peers! Here are some good questions to lead with! Try answering them for yourself to get you thinking about what you want your classmates to know about you!

  1. What is your full name?
  2. What is your favorite memory from this summer?
  3. Favorite color?
  4. Favorite movie?
  5. Favorite food? least favorite food?
  6. What would you put in the perfect school lunch?
  7. Who is your bests friend?
  8. What is your favorite song or band?
  9. What do you want to be when you grow up?
  10. What is something that makes you happy?
  11. If you could have one wish, what would you wish for?

Wednesday August 19th: Into the Book!

Learning reading strategies with virtual/distance learning can be very challenging. I found a site called “Into the Book” which helps children incorporate various reading strategies to improve their reading speed and accuracy skills!

Thursday August 20th: Dance Mat Typing!

When I learned how to type properly, my teacher uses multiple techniques to help. She had special key blocking devices, finger strengtheners, and hand-over-hand approaches that helped me learn the muscle movement patterns to type properly. Since hands-on learning is going to be a challenge this year, here is a site that does a really nice job of breaking down proper typing form down for kids!

Friday August 21st: What do you want to know about the upcoming school year?

Use some time today to think about what this school year might look like. If you will be in-person: what are your fears? What do you think the days will look like? How will this year be different than the past school years?

For those going to virtual school: What are your expectations for learning? Do you think you will be able to focus while in school at home? What fears do you have about online learning? What subject do you think will be hardest? easiest?

Saturday August 22: Exercise!

Work your way through the following exercises! Try to go down the list 3 times!

  • 10 squats
  • 30 second plank
  • 50 high knees
  • 15 sit ups
  • 5 burpees
  • 1 crab crawl across the room!

Sunday August 23: Get outside!

It’s starting to look a lot like fall out there! Take a long walk and see if you can find any trees with leaves changing colors!!!!! What is your favorite fall activity? Mine is definitely carving pumpkins!  mmm pumpkin seeds….
